Discourse Analysis of Farrokhi Sistani's Poetry Based on Foucault's Discourse Theory

Parisa Ranjbari , Fatemeh Modarresi (Author in Charge)

Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Farrokhi Sistani"s courtly poetry is one of the most important literary texts of the Ghaznavid period, in which the poet uses language and metaphor to define his own position, the sultan, and his enemies within the framework of the discourse of power. The aim of this research is to examine the process of subjectification and the function of the language of domination in Farrokhi"s poems based on Foucault"s approach in order to show how poetry helps to reproduce power relations and political legitimacy.

METHODOLOGY: This study was conducted using the critical discourse analysis method and Foucault"s theoretical framework. First, examples of Farrokhi Sistani"s verses in which the poet, the sultan, and enemies are represented were selected, and then, using a descriptive-analytical approach, metaphors and poetic images were examined in relation to the concepts of power and truth.

FINDINGS: The results showed that the poet subjects himself as a “narrator of truth”, places enemies in the position of “falsehood” and “darkness”, and introduces the sultan as the axis of justice and light. Also, the use of metaphors such as “sun”, “rose garden” and “blade” shows that the language of poetry serves to consolidate political power and makes relations of domination appear natural and sacred.

CONCLUSION: The analysis of Farrokhi Sistani’s poems shows that courtly poetry is not merely praise and adoration, but also a tool for reproducing royal discourse and legitimizing power relations. In Foucault’s theoretical framework, these poems are a clear example of the process of subjectification and the function of the language of domination that defines identities, produces truth and consolidates political order.
